Case Study 017: S.Y.
In October 2017, a case of severe scoliosis was managed at our facility involving a 42-year-old female, referred to as S.Y. She presented with a distinctive reverse S-curve scoliosis, where the top curve was convex left at 112 degrees and the bottom curve convex right at 122 degrees. This degree of curvature is considered quite severe, with S.Y.’s left hip being 15 degrees higher than the right side.
The primary symptoms S.Y. experienced were severe back pain and reduced lung volume, both of which are common in patients with pronounced scoliosis. The pain was debilitating, affecting her daily activities and overall quality of life. The reduced lung volume also suggested a significant impact on her respiratory efficiency, a critical concern in scoliosis treatment.
Our treatment approach was multifaceted, focusing on reducing pain and correcting the spinal curvature as much as possible. S.Y. underwent two weeks of intensive care treatment, which included a regimen of core strengthening exercises and posture correction techniques. These exercises are crucial in scoliosis management as they help stabilize and support the spine. Additionally, a custom-fit brace was designed using state-of-the-art technology, tailored to S.Y.’s specific curvature, to aid in the gradual correction of her spine.
Post-treatment assessments showed a remarkable improvement in S.Y.’s condition. The top curve of her spine was reduced to 89 degrees, and the bottom curve to 103 degrees. Not only did this reduction in curvature alleviate her back pain, but it also improved her lung volume, addressing the respiratory issues associated with her scoliosis.
This case of S.Y. demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted scoliosis treatment in managing pain and improving spinal alignment. It also highlights the importance of personalized care and the use of advanced bracing technology in the treatment of complex scoliosis cases. Our commitment to providing comprehensive scoliosis care has once again proven to enhance patient outcomes significantly.
