Case Study 018: Y.K.
Introduction: This case report details the clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes of a 74-year-old female patient, Y.K, diagnosed with scoliosis. The patient’s initial assessment in August 2023 revealed an S-curve scoliosis with a 45-degree top right curve and a 57-degree bottom left curve.
Clinical Presentation: Y.K presented with symptoms indicative of advanced scoliosis, including osteoporosis, severe low back pain, numbness in the limbs, spinal rotation, bone degeneration, uneven shoulders, and a straight neck. These symptoms significantly impacted her quality of life, necessitating medical intervention.
Treatment Protocol: The treatment strategy comprised a 2-week intensive care treatment plan, incorporating spinal and neck traction treatment and the use of an order-made corset. Concurrently, Y.K engaged in targeted exercises aimed at abdominal strengthening, posture correction, and neck C-curve restoration.
Outcomes: Post-treatment evaluation revealed reduced spine curvature, with the top curve decreasing to 36 degrees and the bottom curve to 41 degrees. Y.K experienced substantial relief from lower back pain, which was her main concern before treatment. The corset stabilized her spine, reducing stress on the vertebral column. Limb numbness decreased, indicating improved nerve function. Spinal rotation and bone degeneration symptoms improved, leading to better posture and reduced discomfort. Shoulder unevenness improved significantly, and her straight neck was corrected towards a more natural curvature with neck C-curve restoration exercises. Overall, the treatment enhanced Y.K’s mobility and quality of life.
Conclusion: The case of Y.K demonstrates that a comprehensive treatment approach, including physical therapy exercises and specialized traction treatment, can effectively manage scoliosis-related pain and curvature in elderly patients. Further monitoring is recommended to assess long-term outcomes and the potential need for ongoing treatment.
